Ruthann Knudson was born on October 24, 1941 in Wisconsin. She received her B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Minnesota in 1963 and her M.A. in 1966 also in Anthropology, with a concentration in pre-historic pottery, also from the University of Minnesota. She received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Washington State University in 1973. Dr. Knudson was a Teaching Assistant in Anthropology at the University of Minnesota (1963-1965), an Instructor of Anthropology at the University of Northern Colorado (1966-1968), a Teaching Assistant of Anthropology at Washington State University (1968-1970), and a Visiting Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio (1974). She was appointed Resource Management Archeologist and Assistant Research Professor at the University of Idaho (1975-1979), and advanced to Associate Research Professor of Anthropology also at UI (1979-1981). She resigned from UI due to the University's lack of funds to the Laboratory of Anthropology and moved to the west coast to serve as the Senior Cultural Resource Manager at the firm of Woodward-Clyde Consultants, San Francisco, California in 1981. In 1980 she was nominated to serve on the U.S. President's Advisory Council on Historic Preservation by the Society of American Archeologists. Dr. Knudson's memberships include the Washington Association of American Anthropologists. She is also a Research Associate with the Anthropology Department of the California Academy of Sciences.
