Earle Gorton Linsley

Earle Gorton Linsley was born in Oakland, California, on May 1, 1910. He received his B.S. in 1932 and his M.S. in 1933, both in entomology and both from the University of California at Berkeley. In 1938 he received his doctorate in systematic entomology from the same institution. Dr. Linsley's research focused on systematic entomology and on the biology and taxonomy of beetles and solitary bees. He also researched forest entomology, the pollination of agricultural seed crops and insects affecting stored food products.

In 1939 Dr. Linsley was appointed Instructor at U.C. Berkeley and in 1943 he was appointed Assistant Professor in Entomology. In 1949 he was both an Associate Professor and Associate Entomologist and in 1951, he advanced to Professor of Entomology at U.C. Berkeley. From 1951 to 1959, he served as Chairman of the Department of Entomology and Parasitology, also at U.C. Berkeley.

Dr. Linsley served as editor of the Pan Pacific Entomologist and was winner of a Guggenheim fellowship in 1947. He was also President of the Entomological Society of America and was a research associate with the California Academy of Sciences.

On January 1, 1961, Dr. Linsley was appointed Dean at the U.C. Berkeley, College of Agriculture and in 1973 he became Emeritus Professor and Entomologist. Dr. Linsley died on March 8, 2000.
