James Wilson Tilden

James Wilson Tilden was born in Philo, California, on December 31, 1904. He received his A.B. from San Jose State University in 1942. He received his A.M. from Stanford University in 1947 and in 1948 he received his Ph.D. in Biology. His studies focused on insect ecology, insect morphology and habits of insects. Beginning in 1948 he served as Professor of Entomology at San Jose State University.

Dr. Tilden was a member of the Entomological Society of America, Society of Systematic Zoology and the California Academy of Sciences (beginning in 1948).

Dr. James Wilson Tilden died on December 27, 1988. Many of Dr. Tilden's specimens, especially butterflies, were given to the California Academy of Sciences.
