TURTLES

Back to main Checklist The initial checklist was produced from John Iverson's (1993) "Revised Checklist and Maps of the Turtles of the World". The present list depends primarily on P. P. van Dijk's reports (1993, 1994), which include his personal observations in central Myanmar and his examination of museum voucher specimens. Taxonomy follows van Dijk (2000).

Column Status indicates whether this species has been verified by the Project (V) or has been reported in the literature (lit). Due to consideration of CITES, many turtle species have been vouchered by photographs, not specimens (MPV).

1. Cyclemys oldhamii has been restricted to NE India, Burma, Thailand, Malay peninsula to Borneo, Sumatra and Java while C. dentata is from Thailand and Malay peninsula to Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and Palawan and Sulu regions of the Philippines (Fritz, Gaulke and Lehr 1997; Fritz, Gaulke, and Schöder 1996).

2. Early authors report from Bago and Tenasserim; latter locality vouchered by a BMNH specimen (fide P.P. van Dijk, ltr. Jan. 1999).

3. A newly described species (McCord 1997) based on specimens of unconfirmed provenance. This taxon is potentially invalid because the type series may be a hybrid produced by captive propogation (Aoki, in Fritz and Obst 1999). Wink et al. (2001) suggest that it may be a hybrid of M. mutica and Chinemys reevesii.

4. Myanmar Biodiversity Museum (MBM) has a voucher specimen of a neonate found dead on beach.

5. This North American species was observed at Botataung Pagoda, Yangon. The Myanmar Herpetological Survey Project has not recorded the species in the wild.

6. Reports may represent misidentified Geochelone platynota (van Dijk 1993).
