Description Modern style, commercially made doll showing young standing woman lavishly dressed in black and gold kimono made of commercial fabric; Papier mâché head has painted facial features and painted hair that is upswept to the top of the head and wrapped with a gold cord; Small wooden plaque in front of the doll is imprinted with Japanese text; Doll and plaque are mounted on black lacquered wooden platform; Paper label on base probably identifies shop or factory where doll was produced and/or sold.

Description Shadow puppet in the form of a cardboard cutout of a white fox shown, representing the messenger of Inari, the rice god, standing upright and dressed in a kabuki costume of a brown robe, as worn by Ishikawa Danjuro, who died in 1903 but who, during his lifetime, frequently visited the Oji Shrine to pray for the success of his theatrical career; A role in “Shibaraku” was among one of his most famous and the play is among “18 Famous Plays” reserved only for the Danjuro family; In this toy, the fox is shown holding holding a bamboo stick which moves up and down when one of the bamboo sticks on which he is mounted is moved up and down, recreating a motion from the play; On the fox’s kimono is printed an image of concentric squares, representing “3 rice measures,” another reference to Inari.

Description Animated toy in the form of a rabbit, carved and assembled from several pieces of wood, standing and pivoting on its hind legs, while holding a large pestle in its teeth, with which it is pounding rice paste or mochi in a mortar; The rabbit is wearing a dark green cape; Both rabbit and mortar are mounted on a rectangular wooden base; Mochi cake is eaten during the full moon, and this type of toy is often given to children at the beginning of the year to ensure their health and happiness; Japanese writing is on back of rabbit’s cape and on one side of the pestle; Shop’s name (?) and telephone number are stamped on the base in red ink.
