Description Miniature cast iron temple bell in a truncated cylindrical shape with deep vertical ridges on the exterior; Small flat diamond-shaped iron clapper is suspended inside from length of brown cotton string that also hangs downward for securing to rectangular paper streamer (not attached) that is imprinted on both faces with multicolored bands and perforated at one end; Heavy perforated loop on top of bell was included as part of the casting, and small metal ring is threaded through it, to which is tied length of brown cotton string for hanging the bell.

Description Pair of small rectangular cast iron temple bells (A and C) whose tops are slightly smaller than their bases; One bell is slightly larger than the other; Exterior sides are all decorated with series of incised vertical lines; Small iron clapper is suspended inside each bell from length of green cotton string, which extends upward through top of bell for hanging it, and also below bell for securing to handmade rectangular paper streamers (B and D; not attached) that are hand printed with blue indigo repeating geometric patterns on both faces and perforated at one end; Exterior finish is rust brown in color.

Description Pair of hand-modeled, spherical clay bells, each with a long slit on the underside and containing a clay ball inside; One of the bells is painted orange and the other blue, and each is painted with human facial features (eyes, nose, mouth), with the slit on the bell’s surface forming the mouth; Each bell has a perforation at the top, and they are strung together on thread that is nailed to the end of a short twig, of which the bark has been peeled back on one end, forming a kind of hat for the bells; The twig, itself, is painted with 1 white band and 2 red bands, and a length of native cordage has been threaded through a hole near the twig’s proximal end to form a loop for hanging the bells.

Description Model of a whaling boat, a narrow, streamlined and flat-bottomed rowing vessel vessel developed in the 1700s to pursue whales; The hull of the boat is carved from a single piece of wood, with an extended masthead beam notched into the bow at water level; The stern is squared off, and two crossbeams are laid across the boat near the bow, probably to serve as seats; Interior of boat is painted red, the underbody is black, and the sides are painted in brightly colored diagonal stripes, some with floral designs: Maker’s name (?) is inscribed in Japanese characters on underside. Description Model of a flat-bottomed boat on a wheeled cart; Body of the boat is carved from a single piece of wood with additional pieces added later; From the square stern, the sides taper gradually toward the bow, where an added beam extends forward; The interior hold of the boat is painted brown and four narrow cylindrical crossbeams extend across it and project through the hull; A flat brown plank is attached across the stern; The exterior sides of the boat are painted with a red and green floral motif and the bottom edges are painted black; The immovable wheels are mounted on square wooden “axles”; This type of boat is modeled after boats that were used for whaling, starting in the 17th Century. Description Model of a flat-bottomed boat on a wheeled, flatbed cart; Body of the boat is carved from a single piece of wood with additional pieces added later; From the square stern, the sides taper gradually toward the bow, where an added beam extends forward; The flat-bottomed interior hold of the boat is painted orange and three narrow cylindrical crossbeams extend across it nearer the stern end and project through the hull; A flat brown plank is attached across the stern; The upper sides of the boat are painted white, while the lower sides are painted in diagonal bands of blue, white, and orange; The bed of the cart on which the boat is mounted is painted brown and its movable wheels are orange; The wheels are mounted on wooden “axles”, which, in turn, pass through lengths of bamboo that are glued to underside of cart; An unidentified stamp in Japanese script is stamped on the underside of the cart; This type of toy boat was fashioned after model whaling boats made by whalers for their own children, starting in the 17th Century. Description Small wooden box carved in the shape of a highly stylized, plump bird that is probably in flight; After the basic shape of the bird was cut from a flat piece of wood, it was carefully split to form two halves, and then the center of each was minimally hollowed out to form an interior compartment; Edges of upper half or lid of box are rounded and a single shallow incised lines depicts the bird’s wings and a single brad or possible insert of dark wood serves as the eye, but otherwise the box is undecorated.
