Description Mold-impressed hollow clay figurine of standing man representing Sugawara Michizane (born 845, died 903), a Japanese scholar of Chinese literature during the Heian Period, who was later deified as Tinjin, the patron of scholarship and literature; Figurine’s clothing is painted including black shoes, orange undergarment or pants, and a black jacket with large, flowing sleeves with plum blossom designs, and a high black hat; “48:12.2” [Dec. 2, 1973] is printed on base; Portion of figurine below waist on back is left unpainted.
