Description Four hand-modeled figurines, each depicting a kappa, a spirit that usually lives in lakes, ponds or streams and has both Shinto and Buddhist attributes and are usually depicted with the the body of a tortoise and a cavity or bald spot atop the head which holds its strength-giving fluid; Kappa are generally the size of a small child but incredibly strong, capable of dragging horses, cattle, and humans into the water and draining them of life; Each of these four figures has a tortoise shell on its back and a small plate-like device on its head; They are shown seated and are painted green; Three of the figures are playing musical instruments (lute, flute, and drums) and the fourth one is holding a jar in one arm and drinking from an upraised dish.
