Description Set of three unpainted clay rattles; A is pear-shaped and possibly depicts a fruit or a seed; B is in the form of a Yamabushi tengu, or mountain monk tengu; Tengu are mountain forest goblins with both Buddhist and Shinto attributes; They are skilled warriors and patrons of the martial arts, and come in two forms, the first a crow-like creature with long beak and wings, the other a more human-like form but with a long nose and wearing a monk’s cap; Tengu can transform themselves into men, women, or children, can disappear from one place and immediately reappear in another distant location, and have other supernatural powers; C is in the form of Otafuku, commonly known as the "goddess of mirth", who also goes by the name of Okame; She is depicted here with very full round and dimpled cheeks; Each rattle has an elongated sliver of clay removed from its base and contains a small clay marble for making a rattling sound; A possible artist’s hallmark is stamped on the side of each rattle; A commercially braided cord (blue on A and B; orange on C) is slipped through a pair of holes at the top of each rattle.

Description Four small rattles, each made from a hollowed shell of a nut or the pit of a fruit, which has small hole cut into each side and then cut open along the bottom and pried apart enough to insert a small brass bell inside; A third small hole has been cut near the top of each casing to insert a looped string; Three of the rattles are painted with he faces of kappa, spirits that usually live in lakes, ponds or streams and have both Shinto and Buddhist attributes and are usually depicted with the body of a tortoise and a cavity or bald spot atop the head which holds its strength-giving fluid; Kappa are generally the size of a small child but incredibly strong, capable of dragging horses cattle, and humans into the water and draining them of life; thus children are warned to be especially careful when playing near water; Each of these kappa rattles is painted with a red pointed beak, large black and white eyes, black hair and a blue bald spot atop their heads; The fourth rattle is painted with the face of a small child, with only the face shown, apparently wrapped in a green headscarf; Artist’s signature or other information is written in white paint in Japanese script on reverse side of the fourth rattle.

Description Press-molded bells in shape of a bird-like head, each depicting a karau tengu, a mountain goblin with both Shinto and Buddhist attributes that include supernatural powers to transform into human or animal form, to speak without moving one’s mouth, and to move instantly from place to place; The karasu tengu form is depicted with the head of a crow-like bird and a human body; The larger example here is mostly green, with red beak, golden eyebrows, and a monk’s black hat; Red ribbon threaded through two holes at top; Smaller example is an orange color overall, with silver eyebrows and also a monk’s black hat; Yellow ribbon is threaded through two holes at top; Both bells have incised inscriptions on back.

Description Ball made by carefully winding threads in certain patterns and colors to form certain designs or geometric shapes; The background color of this ball is red, while black, green, gold, and pale green have been woven over the top of the red to produce a pattern of interlocking squares and triangles, each containing a star-like motif; Traditionally, balls of this sort were made by a mother and then presented to her daughter at the beginning of the new year and used for catching; More recently, they are used as hanging ornaments; Thread balls are made in virtually every Japanese prefecture.
