Description | A: Bolo (knife) with a long hand forged, single-edged steel blade with a straight back and a curved cutting edge that expands toward the distal end before curving sharply to intersect with the back edge; Blade is hafted into a wooden handle, which is completely wrapped in braided rattan, with the rows of braiding perpendicular to the blade at both ends of the handle and parallel to the blade in the grip area; B: Wooden scabbard for bolo, originally carved from two pieces of wood, of which the back piece was shallowly carved out to accommodate the shape and thickness of the bolo's blade and whose reverse face is shallowly fluted; Braided rattan band is wrapped around scabbard near top, either to secure two halves of scabbard together or to hold bolo in place; Length of plied native cordage rope is doubled through rattan loop and similar one at top of scabbard; There is no evidence that this scabbard ever had a second top half, although bolo could not have been carried safely without such. | |
