Description | Modern style commercially made doll of a young woman standing by a wooden mortar and holding a wooden pestle for pounding rice; Doll is lavishly dressed in ornately printed fabric kimono that is mostly black with gold, red, and white designs on the bottom and whose top and sleeves is gold and white; Both top and bottom of the kimono are lined with red fabric; Doll also wears around her waist an obi with a red and gold checkerboard pattern; The clay face is delicately painted with facial features, and synthetic hair is pulled into a small bundle just above the forehead, while one lock hangs along each side of the face and the rest is pulled back and tied behind the head and left to fall down her back; Doll is mounted on a black lacquered rectangular wooden base; Japanese inscription on clear acetate or cellophane tape is attached to front of mortar. | |
