Description Pair of modeled clay doll heads, each minimally painted and mounted on a tapered wooden stick, for placement in a straw bundle at a temple; (A) depicts a man with black eyes, gray eyebrows, and a red mouth, wearing a small blue cap that is tied under his chin with red strings; (B) depicts a woman with facial features similar to the man and with a short hairstyle that frames her face; Paper label with single word in Japanese script is attached to each wooden stick, just below the doll’s head.

Description Small round coiled basket holding a small child who is tucked in among several blankets of various fabrics; Child is dressed in multi-colored fabric and his/her hair is cut in a bowl-shape; Attached to the blanket is a miniature dog figurine, a cloth “doll”, and a pink ribbon; This type of item illustrates an old Japanese custom of swaddling a child in an upright position while the parents worked in the fields, a custom later repeated also in the home, using a basket as a makeshift playpen; Souvenirs of this type are available Tsuruoka and are intended to ensure a happy family life and many descendants.

Description Pair of dolls dressed in obis and kimonos and fashioned entirely from folded sheets of chiyogami (patterned) and irogami (solid colored) paper; The first doll wears a long gold and white print kimono (with red interior) and a white and purple print obi which is folded at her back; The second doll wears a red and white striped kimono (with red interior) and a red, pink, and lavender striped obi which is suspended down her back; Dolls of this type are especially popular around the time of Hina Matsuri, observed on March 3 and sometimes referred to as Girls Day, although its history and traditions are much more complex.

Description Pair of dolls, each dressed in a kimono and obi and fashioned entirely from folded sheets of chiyogami (patterned) and irogami (solid colored) paper; First doll wears a brown and white vertically striped kimono with a blue, white, and gold obi that is wrapped around her waist and hangs down in the back; Second doll wears a red kimono with horizontal white stripes and a pink obi that is wrapped around her waist and hangs down at the back; Each doll has long black hair that hangs down over the shoulders in front and back; Dolls of this type are especially popular around the time of Hina Matsuri, observed on March 3 and sometimes referred to as Girls Day, although its history and traditions are much more complex.

Description Set of three young female dolls known as “Elder Sister” dolls, each with a painted clay face and dressed in a red/green/white striped kimono made of folded paper; Elaborate paper hair ornaments accent their paper hairstyles; This type of doll originated as a pastime for the court ladies in Matsue, but later turned into a cottage industry; The dolls are typically sold in sets of three, with each doll having a different hairstyle.

Description Set of three nested dolls of graduated sizes that fit inside each other and together all set inside a small bowl-like container; Smallest figurine is that of a child wrapped in an orange robe; Middle-sized doll represents a woman dressed in an orange undergarment and a blue outer robe with floral designs; Woman’s long black hair trails down her back; Largest figure represents a man dressed in a blue and white undergarment and a black outer robe and he carries a scroll in his right hand; The child figurine is a solid piece of wood, white the man and woman are hollow and have been turned on a lathe; The bowl-like container in which all three dolls sit was also turned on a lathe and has a flat painted green base and low vertical sides that are painted with alternating blue and orange stripes on a white background; Interior of bowl is unpainted; Probable artist’s signature is painted in gold paint on man’s back.
