Description | Short round pitcher with short footed base and lower sides that flare outward initially, then abruptly rise vertically and then turn inward to form a high, broad shoulder, and finally rise vertically again to form a narrow diameter neck with slightly everted rim and rounded lip; One side of the neck is pinched outward to form a spout; Single flattened handle is attached to upper side of neck just below rim and extends outward and then curves downward vertically to the second point of attachment on the shoulder; Sides on lower body of pitcher are pressed inward, so the finished vessel is actually 8-sided, and each side is decorated in dark brown with negative (white) image of stacked “8†or intertwined “S†shapes; Band along shoulder contains continuous line of interlocking geometric motifs. [From 1983 appraisal by Professor Pinder-Wilson, UC Berkeley: "Jug (imitating metal form); made in a mold/ Buff gray clay/ Tall neck, horizontal shoulder above eight-sided body/ Foot ring/ Decoration reserved in luster ground, chestnut luster; opaque glaze/ Handle from top of neck to shoulder, entirely restored."] | |
