Description Untitled painting on white poster board depicting 9 Koshare clowns, two female dancers, and one pueblo man bearing ceremonial staff; Bodies of Koshares are painted black with white stripes; Each wears black breechclout and head cap with two extending horns; Koshare at far left wears brown sheepskin tunic and one at far right plays pueblo-style barrel drum; Female dancers on left end of row wear black one-shoulder pueblo dresses, woven shawls (white with red end bands) and rainbow tabletas and carry feathers in each hand; Man in far right background wears white pants and red shirt and carries long staff with embroidered banner; Signature "Awa Tsireh" is printed in black ink in lower right corner. This painting was selected by Ruth and Charles deYoung Elkus in 1954 as their annual holiday card, printed by the Grabhorn Press in San Francisco. Awa Tsireh was the cousin of Margaret Lou Gutierrez, whose work is represented in the CAS pottery collection.

Description Hand forged single-edged cake knife with slightly convex cutting edge whose width expands toward distal end and whose back edge is terraced as it curves downward at distal end; Solid silver handle curves gracefully toward proximal end where it curves around in J-shape; Pair of parallel lines is stamped along upper edge of handle on both faces, following the contours of the handle; Knife is unsigned. Eleanor Begay (Kenneth Begay’s wife) said in November 1978 that the weight balance of this piece was right for her husband’s work, whose cutlery was always balanced, but she could not say for sure that this was his work. Kay Begay Rogers (April 2015) affirmed that this knife looks like her father’s work, and thought that it possibly had a knife stand with it, and if so, the stand might have been stamped with the appropriate hallmarks.

Description Cake knife with slight convex cutting edge and asymmetrical back edge; Flat blade expands in width toward distal end, then abruptly tapers in series of terraces; Short solid handle is equal in width to narrowest portion of blade and expands slightly at proximal end and is decorated with pair of parallel lines encircling handle just behind juncture with blade and series of crescent lines that fan out from small circle on proximal end of both faces of handle; "Sterling Hand Made" are stamped on one face of blade along with hallmarks "KB" (Kenneth Begay) and image of a Navajo hogan (White Hogan Shop, Scottsdale, AZ).

Description Salt spoon with short curved handle with slightly expanded proximal end; Handle is stamped with 5 parallel diagonal lines and a crescent shape; Asymmetrical bowl of spoon has 5 small holes arranged in L-shaped pattern and is partially enclosed on its distal end; Underside of handle is stamped "Sterling" with initials "KB" (Kenneth Begay) and a hogan (hallmark for White Hogan Shop, Scottsdale, AZ). Note: The White Hogan Shop used a casting technique to replicate a number of Kenneth Begay-designed pieces, including earrings, cuff links, pendants, salt spoons, and bracelets. The cast bracelets were often sold in pairs. Cast pieces were marked only with the designer’s initials and the White Hogan shop mark, whereas handmade pieces were also stamped, “Hand Made.”
