Description Very shallow round bowl with flat base and widely flared sides; Interior and exterior are scraped very smooth and highly burnished; Designs on interior are painted in matte gray slip and include cross-hatched triangle in center with three arms extending out to rim where each encircles a cross-hatched oval shape and then terminates in a hatch-lined triangle with a scalloped end, possibly representing a stylized wing motif; Series of 3 parallel lines encircles interior rim; Exterior base is also painted in matte gray slip, apparently over signature "Marie + Julian" making the off-center and already very lightly incised signature extremely difficult to discern; Bowl is reduction fired to black-on-black color.

Description Round bowl with flat base, rounded sides, and inward curving rim; Interior and exterior are scraped smooth and highly burnished; Carved feather (?) motif comprising 3 stacked triangles at one end and curved hook at other end is repeated 3 times around upper sides of bowl on exterior; Carved motifs are painted with dark gray slip; Bowl is reduction fired to glossy black color; Signature "Margaret Tafoya" is incised in script on base. Margaret Tafoya is considered by many to be the matriarch of Santa Clara potters, having many children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who have continued her legacy. She was the grandmother of Linda Tafoya-Oyenque, the sister of Christina Naranjo, and the aunt of Mary Cain, Teresita Naranjo, and Mida Tafoya, all of whose works are represented in the CAS pottery collection.
