Description Tall round vase with flat base and slightly curved walls that rise steeply almost to rim, then curve inward to wide mouth; Interior and exterior are scraped smooth; Exterior is also covered with dark rust brown slip and highly burnished; Painted design bands encircle upper and lower exterior sides; Lower band is divided into 4 panels, each containing asymmetrical gray terraced triangle within larger tan triangle and row of gray triangles pendant from upper framing line, all outlined in a flesh tone; Upper design band includes a continuous flesh-toned rectilinear fret, framed above and below by scalloped band in gray, tan, and flesh tones; "Catherine" is written in pencil on base.

Description Round wedding vase with flat base and globose body rising to two flaring, cylindrical spouts linked by a stirrup handle; Exterior surface is scraped smooth and highly burnished; Two outlined bear paw motifs are incised on sides of vase, opposite each other; Vase is reduction fired to glossy black color; Signature "Severa Sta. Clara" is incised in script on base. Severa Tafoya is the sister of Van Gutierrez, sister-in-law of Lela Gutierrez, the mother of Angela Baca, the grandmother of Tina Garcia and Greg Garcia, and the aunt of Margaret and Luther Gutierrez, all of whose works are represented in the CAS pottery collection.
