Description Untitled* pen and ink and colored pencil drawing on white illustration board depicting Eskimo legend of how Eskimo dancing began, as also explained in accompanying note by artist; Drawing depicts eagle flying high above earth's surface while holding Eskimo man in its talons, to free himself, man stabbed eagle with his hunting knife, fatally injuring the eagle and forcing it to land; As eagle lay dying, it told man to start dancing using eagle's heartbeat as the rhythm, later to be replaced by a drum beat; Signature" Kivetoruk Moses, Nome, Alaska" is handwritten in black ink in lower right corner. Label attached to reverse of drawing identifies the artist as being 60 years old. *Moses did several renditions of this painting, sometimes titled “Man and Eagle.” The accompanying explanatory note [in CAS accession file] for this painting, written by Moses’ wife, Bessie, is titled “No. 1 Eskimo.”

Description Deep round sifter basket with somewhat rounded base and rounded sides, rising to a wide mouth; Basket is woven entirely in plaited technique; Warp and weft material is split yucca leaves; Warps and wefts are arranged in groups of 3, and plaiting proceeds in an over 3/under 3 (groups of warps/wefts) pattern, resulting in a design of concentric diamonds; Exterior side of split yucca leaves is turned toward interior for both warps and wefts, while exterior surface is turned toward exterior of basket; At the rim, both the warp and weft fibers are folded over a single heavy wooden stem that has been bent to form a continuous ring, and then stitched to themselves using a single row of yucca leaves in a twining technique; Ends of warps and wefts are trimmed approximately 3.5 cm below the twined row.

Description Man's shirt with front and back woven in one piece (open sides are connected with short strips of black elastic) and the separate sleeves attached at shoulder; Shirt is primarily of hand woven cotton cloth woven in plain weft-faced tapestry technique; Sleeves are constructed from flat panels that are folded in half and expanded with inset of commercial white fabric; Front, back, and sleeves are decorated with embroidered terraced triangles and rectangular blocks in black, red, and green, all of which incorporate negative designs of small triangles and zigzags; Single multi-colored yarn pompom is attached to cuff of each sleeve and pair of pompoms is attached on each side of waist.

Description Deep, round bowl with flat base and rounded, flaring sides; Interior and exterior are scraped smooth; Interior and upper body of exterior are slipped white; Exterior underbody and base are slipped red; Wide design band on exterior contains 3 large floral motifs, each with central petal flanked on either side by a large leaf that seemingly grows from paired framing lines along bottom of band; Solid black line outlines lip; Bowl is unsigned. Some researchers have identified this bowl as a Cochiti Pueblo piece, but a group of Cochiti potters, in conversation with Katherine Rust in November, 1981, thought that it is definitely from Santo Domingo.
