Description Round basket with wide flat base and rounded sides that curve inward toward rim; Woven in coiling technique on 3-rod foundation; Designs include 4 small crosses on base, very wide zigzag band with slender serrated edges encircling side of basket and extending from base to rim (lightning pattern), and alternating dark and light segments around rim; Black quail topknot feathers are randomly placed around upper sides of basket and around rim. [In 1977 Pomo basketweaver Mable McKay identified this design as the “Lighting” design. She also attributed this basket to the Long Valley area.]

Description Round basket with flat base and rounded sides tapering inward toward rim, forming wide mouth; Woven in 3-rod coil; Design is in redbud and dyed bulrush and consists of plain band on base (redbud) and diagonal band with hooked rectangles (quail topknot pattern) flanked by diagonally stacked triangles, all repeated 3 times (quail topknot motif repeated 4 times) on sides. [In 1977 Pomo basketweaver Mable McKay attributed this basket to the Lake County area.]

Description Round basket with flat base and rounded sides that curve in at rim; Coiled on 3-rod foundation; Exterior is completely covered in featherwork in a banded pattern of 8 open diamond shapes in yellow meadowlark feathers on background of green mallard feathers. [In 1977 Pomo basketweaver Mable McKay, commented that weavers in the Ukiah area cut or trimmed feathers on baskets, such as this example, whereas weavers in Long Valley did not, unless the basket was passed outside their cultural group. Trimming the feathers diminishes or “breaks down” the power of the spirit, and Mable said she had never seen any basket in a museum collection that had not been “broken down.”]

She also attributed this basket to the Mission Lakeport area, and thought it was probably woven by the same person who wove CAS 0370-0761.]

[In 1977 Pomo basketweaver Mable McKay identified this as a burden or work basket with a rattlesnake design. She said such baskets were made as an initiation gift for a teenager by the parents and presented by a healer during a ceremony.]
