Description Modeled figurine of seated male, shown with his legs stretched out in front of him and holding pottery jar in his lap; Man's facial features are modeled and painted; His long black hair is cropped short at the sides but falls freely down his back and is decorated with 2 eagle feathers; He wears maroon breechclout, rust colored moccasins, multicolored choker with mosaic inlay shell pendant, and turquoise colored arm bands; Pottery jar is painted with black and rust brown geometric design; Signature "Pablita Velarde" is painted in black paint along outside of right leg. Pablita Velarde is best known as a painter, but earlier in life was encouraged to make pottery, but she never became proficient. She is the mother of Helen Hardin, also a painter whose early work is represented in the CAS painting collection, and the sister of Legoria Tafoya, whose pottery is represented in the CAS pottery collection.
