Description |
3-dimensional figurine of wise man in 17-piece nativity set, shown in standing position and holding a silver chain as offering to the baby Jesus; Figure's facial features are incised and he wears pink head band, gray serape with multi-colored stripes, white pants, blue shirt, and rust colored moccasins; Hair is knotted behind his head; Figurine is mounted on clay base and is unsigned. This and other figures in this nativity set make up Vigil’s Pueblo-style nativity, but he also made colonial Spanish and Plains Indian style nativity sets. |

Deep round jar with flat base, rounded sides, and wide mouth with inward curving rim; Interior and exterior are scraped smooth; Interior of rim and entire exterior are covered with reddish slip and are highly burnished, except for base; Decorative band around upper half of bowl on exterior is divided into 4 panels; 2 different motifs are each repeated twice, including stylized feather and kiva step patterns in gray, tan, and pale pink colors on reddish brown background; "Katherine Vigil, Tesuque Pueblo" and the number "52" are handwritten in pencil on base. |

Round jar with flat base and overall spherical shape with midlevel shoulder, rounded upper body that slopes inward toward rim, and wide mouth; Interior and exterior are scraped smooth; Exterior is covered with dark rust brown slip and highly burnished; Design band around upper sides on exterior is painted in gray, pale coral, tan, and white and includes alternating paired terraced triangles and paired straight-edged triangles, all outlined in white and bordered by double white framing lines above and below; Jar is unsigned. Identified as the work of Catherine Vigil in March, 1982 by her son Martin Vigil, Jr. |

Tall round vase with flat base and slightly curved walls that rise steeply almost to rim, then curve inward to wide mouth; Interior and exterior are scraped smooth; Exterior is also covered with dark rust brown slip and highly burnished; Painted design bands encircle upper and lower exterior sides; Lower band is divided into 4 panels, each containing asymmetrical gray terraced triangle within larger tan triangle and row of gray triangles pendant from upper framing line, all outlined in a flesh tone; Upper design band includes a continuous flesh-toned rectilinear fret, framed above and below by scalloped band in gray, tan, and flesh tones; "Catherine" is written in pencil on base. |

Description |
Deep rectangular berry gathering basket with flat base, rounded corners, and slightly flaring sides, woven in coiled technique over a bundle foundation; Warp material is cedar splints and primary weft material is cedar roots; Designs are woven in imbrication technique and consist of 14 composite vertical stripes extending up the sides of the basket, each comprising a central stripe woven of natural red cherry bark or mud-dyed black cherry bark, flanked on either side by stripes that alternate undyed bear grass with either natural red or mud-dyed black cherry bark; Additional, a band of natural red cherry bark is woven in ribbon beading technique along two coils along the lower sides and also along the final rim coil; Series of small holes in uppermost 3.5 cm of basket indicates location of original loop handles. |

Description |
Large rectangular flat-bottomed basket with slightly flaring sides, and a low interior lip, originally fitted with flat-topped rectangular lid (now missing) and pair of carrying handles (also missing) along end shoulders; Base of basket is woven in plaited technique over wide cedar slats, using cedar roots as the weft; Single bundle around perimeter of base is coil-wrapped and was originally secured to a cedar slat set on edge that formed a low footed pedestal; Sides of basket are woven in coiled technique over cedar slats; Primary weft material is cedar roots; Designs are woven of undyed reed stems and natural (red) and mud-dyed (black) cherry bark, using the imbrication technique on the basket's sides and ribbon beading along base and shoulder of the basket; Designs include two parallel composite zigzag bands that encircle the sides and ends of the basket, each band having a central zigzag of undyed reed stems and alternate "V" segments of each band alternating between natural red and mud-dyed black cherry bark; Single band of mud-dyed black cherry bark is woven in ribbon beading technique along lower sides of basket and along edges of shoulder, and single band of natural red cherry bark is similarly woven along shoulder itself. |
