Description | Miniature wooden cart mounted on two wheel, carrying a wooden beam that is wrapped in a woven tatami mat; Ends of the crossbeams of the cart are wrapped in gold foil; Wooden beam is secured to the cart with two lengths of commercial, multi-plied white cordage; Two bamboo plaques with Japanese script are attached to front of cart; Length of commercial, multi-plied red and white cordage is tied to cart for pulling it. This is souvenir model of lumber transport used during Gosengu [rebuilding of shrine], when buildings, imperial treasures, costumes and furniture are all renewed; Ever since inner shrine (Kotai Jingu) for goddess Amaterasu and outer shrine (Toyouke Dai Jingu) for gods of agricultural harvest were built in Ise, Gosengu has been held; Emperor Tenmu ordered the ceremony done ''every 20 years''; First held by Emperor Jito, ca. 1280 years ago. | |
