Materials | Human hair; Ivory: sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) tooth; Olona (Touchardia latifolia) fiber cordage; Cotton string
Description | Necklace composed of large number (greater than 60 strands) of very finely braided human hair and a large central ivory lei niho palaoa pendant; Only small number of hair strands pass through pendant, with remainder doubled back on either left or right side and tied into bundle at top with native cordage (later augmented with cotton string); Necklaces of this type were worn only by individuals of royal lineage (both men and women) on ceremonial occasions as a symbol of power and influence, and also reportedly by [male] chiefs in battle; Such leis were frequently traded in the later 19th century; The pendant is carved in the shape of a tongue symbolizing the wearer’s oratory and leadership skills; According to Anthony JP Meyer (1995) necklaces of this type are made from a single length of 8-ply, square braided hair, with each section of the braid comprising 50 to 100 strands of hair each.

Description | Large rectangular fragment of kapa, made by beating strips of bark into thin sheets and then overlapping the sheets to form a larger cloth; Extant fragment is a natural off-white or tan color on its back face and pink on the front face; Pink color is possibly derived from bits of red "turkey cloth", a cotton fabric introduced by missionaries which the natives raveled into threads which were then beaten into the kapa to produce this distinctive pink color; No discernible watermark is present; One long edge of fragment is folded over and secured with two parallel rows of hand stitching with plied white thread that extend across entire width of fragment; Fold line and line for hand stitching are marked on reverse in pencil; Hand stitched threads are tied off at one end, indicating an original end of the finished cloth or garment; That same end is also marked by a pencil line, indicating where the larger cloth was to be cut; Opposite short end of fragment is also cut but lacks any pencil park, while second long edge of fragment has been torn.

Description | Large rectangular fragment of kapa, made by beating strip of bark into very thin sheet and then overlapping the sheets to form a larger sheet; Extant fragment is a pale tan color overall and bears a watermark pattern of an all over network of small diamonds with a dot in the center of each diamond, known as "maka upena" or "eyes in the net", referring to a fishing net so filled with fish that the fishes' eyes are pressed against the net; Watermark pattern is pink, possibly derived from "ohelo berry"; Fragment has been cut along all four edges.
