Description Headband consisting of a strip of coarse dark brown hand woven cloth whose edges are folded over and the ends stitched together to form a ring; Attached to it is a second strip that would hang down the wearer’s back; The headband portion is decorated with three rows of large white cowrie shells, sewn to the cloth with black yarn; Bottom edge of headband is stitched with red, yellow-green, and gray yarns in a herringbone pattern; Trailer portion of headband is also decorated with cowrie shells, white buttons and red glass beads, arranged to form four floral motifs, whose centers consist of a large and a small button and a single red glass bead, surrounded by petals of cowrie shells; Each flower is surrounded by additional small white buttons and red glass beads, and a single row of cowrie shells separates adjoining flowers; Warp ends of cloth used in trailer form long decorative fringe at the end.

Description Hair comb and/or ornament carved from a single piece of wood; Short cylindrical handle flares out to form rectangular comb that is flat on both faces and carved with seven elongated cylindrical teeth, all of which taper toward their distal ends; Just above the point where the teeth are conjoined, a decorative black band encircles the comb and is carved with negative “X” shapes; A rectangular block of wood was left during the carving near the base of the handle, possibly to serve as a kind of hand guard; The block of wood is painted black on its edges and scored with series of short parallel lines forming “X” designs; Pair of holes is also drilled through it (one hole flanking each side of the handle) and would have originally held a rooster feather for additional decoration when the comb was worn in the hair.

Description Finely woven hat with wide, flat brim, woven entirely of natural or aniline-dyed (purple) hibiscus fibers that have been split very finely; Weaving is done almost entirely in 2/2 herringbone weave, except for a few rows done in 3/3 weave; Design consists of 4 bands of purple and darker brown, each of which starts at the brim, crosses over the hat’s crown and then loops back again to the brim; A single length of cotton string is incorporated into the weave at the junction of the brim and crown, probably for structural support; Ends of string are left on the exterior. According to the donor, the fine weaving evidenced in this hat is typical of the Mortlocks region.
