Description Large, round brimless hat with a somewhat peaked dome; Interior and exterior are woven in an open lattice pattern of plain, narrowly split cane or bamboo rods, with a layer of pandanus leaves sandwiched between them; Crown rises in center to a secondary rounded dome that is decorated on exterior with pieces of brown leaves that are arranged to form a 6-petal floral motif, two of which have been damaged.

Description Finely woven hat with wide, flat brim, woven entirely of natural or aniline-dyed (purple) hibiscus fibers that have been split very finely; Weaving is done almost entirely in 2/2 herringbone weave, except for a few rows done in 3/3 weave; Design consists of 4 bands of purple and darker brown, each of which starts at the brim, crosses over the hat’s crown and then loops back again to the brim; A single length of cotton string is incorporated into the weave at the junction of the brim and crown, probably for structural support; Ends of string are left on the exterior. According to the donor, the fine weaving evidenced in this hat is typical of the Mortlocks region.

Description Woman's hat with slightly flattened crown and rounded sides, woven entirely in plain twining in full twist overlay technique; The primary warp and weft material is tule stems; Secondary weft material is Indian hemp cordage used for the basket start, undyed (straw colored) and dyed (black) skin of cattail rush leaves used for background overlay material and designs, respectively; Designs include two concentric dashed bands on base, diagonally stacked parallelograms with each parallelogram containing a pair of negative bars (entire motif repeated 3 times on side of hat), and dash band just below rim.

Description Possible headband woven entirely in plain twining technique; Warp material is unidentified split plant stem and primary weft material is unidentified split plant root; Both edges of band incorporate a supplemental warp rod that is perpendicular to the other warps and each primary warp rod make one complete back and forth pass between the two edges, with both ends of the warp rod being bent over the same supplementary warp rod and incorporated into the first (or last?) row of twining; Designs are woven in half-twist overlay technique, using a dyed black plant fiber as the secondary weft fiber; Design consists of a rectilinear open "S" motif repeated 5 times along 2/3 of the band, with the remaining 1/3 of the space (probably intended as the back of the band) left undecorated; NOTE: Both the materials and the weaving technique of this piece are atypical of any tribal group from the USA or Canada -- possibly South American.
