Materials Wood; Natural pigments; Dried mud and/or resin; Cowrie (Cypraeidae) and other shells; Boar tusks
Description 2-dimensional mask in the form of a long, very slender human face with a very pronounced nose and a distended projection that arches over the mouth area, revealing a probable tongue; Eyes are inset with cowrie shells; Face is painted mostly white with the eyes and ridge line of nose outlined in rust brown and black; Boar tusk extends out and curves upward from each side of nose; Tongue is painted rust brown, as is a small bird effigy mounted to arching projection; Remaining surfaces are covered with thick layer of mud and resin which is encrusted with hundreds of small gray or white shells; Masks of this type generally represent male ancestors and are attached to larger dance costumes; Pair of small holes on back of figure's ears may have facilitated this; Cane lashing threaded through perforation at top of carving allows for carrying or hanging carving.
