Description Tall rectangular bag woven in a plaiting (over 2/under 2) technique; Geometric design consisting of two vertical columns of rectangles flanked along sides by row of triangles is painted in black, white, and orange earth pigments on front of bag, with portions of the design further outlined by additional fibers woven onto surface of bag; Two plaited straps are attached vertically to back of bag forming two large loops so bag can be worn on one’s back by slipping one’s arms through the loops; Upper ends of the straps are woven/tied together to form a carrying strap when bag is not being worn; Back of bag is undecorated except for three narrow horizontal bands that are painted orange across top, middle, and bottom.

Description Nearly square mat woven entirely of very thin strips of natural and dyed pandanus leaves, primarily in a simple plaiting technique; Central area of mat is woven of undyed pandanus fibers, framed along all four edges with a narrow border that is woven in diagonal plaiting, using reddish brown beach bur (ata ata) fibers; Border designs consist of row of contiguous diamond shapes along each edge and a solid brown square in each corner; A second border band is woven separately, also in diagonal plaiting technique, using natural pandanus fibers and dyed black hibiscus fibers; Designs in outer border include” crab” pattern alternating with “eye” pattern, along all four edges and continuing uninterrupted around rounded corners; Outer design band is joined to main mat by means of a ridged band on each face that is woven in an over 2/under 2 plaiting technique, using natural pandanus fibers and dyed black hibiscus fibers and then sewn to the underlying mat with native cordage; This mat is an example of jaki-ed mats that were worn as clothing, with a woman wearing one in front and one in back, the two pieces overlapping and secured with a belt of some sort.
