Description Mold-impressed hollow clay figurine of Otafuku (also known as Okame or Uzume), the goddess of mirth, shown seated and wearing a red undergarment and a blue print kimono, and holding a matsutake or mushroom, whose phallic shape is further accentuated here by painting black hairs around its base; The sexual nature of this figurine is further revealed with the exposure of her own genitalia beneath her kimono; The following information is written in Japanese script on back of figurine: "December, 1976, 8th Obata Tuchi Ningyo maker - Bunzo Hosoi (65 years old)."; Portion of figurine’s kimono on reverse is left unpainted.

Description Mold impressed hollow clay whistle in the shape of a pigeon-like bird with a very rotund body and short tail; Entire bird, except for the tail, is painted an off-white color, while its eyes are red and its tiny beak is pink with a gold bridge across the upper beak; Round low relief disk on bird’s back is embossed with three whirling circles and is painted gold; Small hole is pushed through from top of tail(bit of clay is left inside whistle to make rattling noise) and narrow horizontal slit extends from end of tail, connecting with upper hole for blowing the whistle; Small bit of clay from Possible artist’s hallmark is stamped across front of bird, just below the beak.

Description Group of three hand-modeled ceramic rattles, each in the form of a Yamabushi tengu, or mountain monk tengu; Tengu are mountain forest goblins with both Buddhist and Shinto attributes; They are skilled warriors and patrons of the martial arts, and come in two forms, the first a crow-like creature with long beak and wings, the other a more human-like form but with a long nose and wearing a monk’s cap; Tengu can transform themselves into men, women, or children, can disappear from one place and immediately reappear in another distant location, and have other supernatural powers; The three rattles in this group are nearly identical, each having a round head, prominent ears and long nose, down-turned mouth, and gold-painted eye sockets, and wearing a gold-painted monk’s cap; A garland of leaves is embossed on the reverse side of each one, and each rattle contains a small clay ball inside; “A” is painted white and fitted with a white string; “B” is painted dark blue and fitted with a green string; and “C” is painted red and fitted with an orange string.
