Description | Pair of sumo wrestlers, carved from flat pieces of wood; Both figures have movable legs and because their arms are interlocked, they appear to have only one pair of arms between them; Small hole drilled through arms is for insertion of small stick, which is twisted to simulate the various moves made by wrestlers during a match; Figures are unpainted except for painted red and blue loincloths and black facial features; This toy first appeared in the early 19th Century at a festival to commemorate the death of a famous sumo wrestler from the Hinaku area and has been sold at festivals ever since that time. | |

Description | Pair of hand-modeled, spherical clay bells, each with a long slit on the underside and containing a clay ball inside; One of the bells is painted orange and the other blue, and each is painted with human facial features (eyes, nose, mouth), with the slit on the bell’s surface forming the mouth; Each bell has a perforation at the top, and they are strung together on thread that is nailed to the end of a short twig, of which the bark has been peeled back on one end, forming a kind of hat for the bells; The twig, itself, is painted with 1 white band and 2 red bands, and a length of native cordage has been threaded through a hole near the twig’s proximal end to form a loop for hanging the bells. | |
