Description 3 irregularly shaped fragments of kapa, made by beating strips of bark into very thin sheets; All fragments are dark brown in overall color and bear the same watermark of closely spaced, very thin, paired parallel lines alternating with a negative thin zigzag line; Fragment A is also painted with wide very dark brown stripes, alternating with wider stripes of the lighter colored dark brown background; Fragments B and C are painted with narrower parallel dark brown lines spaced approx. 0.6 cm apart on the lighter dark brown background; Fragment B also has a portion of a wider dark brown stripe along one edge; Fragments B and C were originally joined together (see photo); It is unknown if Fragment A was originally part of the same cloth as Fragments B and C, as all fragments have been cut along all edges.

Description Rectangular, four-sided beater with short, tapered cylindrical handle, all carved from a single piece of dense wood; Each of the four faces is carved with a geometric pattern; Three faces have pattern of very shallow and closely spaced longitudinal grooves, and one of the three has additional cross-hatching lines across its mid-section; Fourth face has pattern of 5 deep and widely spaced longitudinal grooves; When mulberry bark is processed for kapa, it is initially beaten with the side of the beater with widely spaced grooves to initially break down the fibers.

Description Kapa beater carved from single piece of dense wood; Proximal end of beater comprises a cylindrical hand that gradually expands toward midsection, where it changes to a square shape in cross-section; Each of the four sides on the distal half of the beater has been carved with a series of straight parallel lines, varying in number, size, depth, and spacing between adjacent lines; Two of the faces have deep but widely spaced carved lines; A third face has shallow but widely spaced carved lines, and the fourth face has deep but closely spaced carved lines; When bark is processed for kapa, it is first beaten with the face bearing the widely spaced lines in order to initially break down the fibers, causing the bark sheet to spread out as much as possible.
