Description | Model of Aleut style two-hole kayak, made with wooden slat frame including keelson, two stringers, gunwales, and numerous cross ribs, all lashed together black or white cotton string; Bow is bifurcated and stern is squared off; Single piece of gut is stretched over entire frame and sewn with string down center of upper deck; Carved wooden figure of hunter is positioned in first cockpit, and dressed in black cloth shirt, white muslin long-sleeved garment, and gut skin parka that is secured at his waist and around the cockpit’s coaming with a strip of dyed black and red sea mammal skin; Figure’s left hand is fashioned from leather; Figure also wears a carved and paintedhunter’s hat that is decorated with several sea lion whiskers; Hat is painted red with alternating bands of blue and black; Three cross straps made from string and used to secure paddles and other hunting tools are in place on the deck (one in front of first cockpit and two in front of second cockpit); Two red and black double-bladed oars rest on the deck, one in front of each cockpit, each kept on top of the kayak by a blue support; The hunter is holding an otter with his left arm; The otter is on its back with its forepaws raised to its face; A red stripe is painted around the otter’s neck; Accessory hunting tools not secured to kayak include three harpoon spears with ivory harpoon heads, one harpoon spear with wooden harpoon head, and a long gaff. | |
