Description Large Ancestral Pueblo-style jar with sloping sides that flare upward from the small base to the enclosed, plain rim; Jar walls are extremely thin; Composed of beige earthenware ceramic clay of slightly different shades; Probably kiln-fired; Textured surface designs were created in the construction process to produce a corrugated surface in the Ancestral Pueblo tradition; Corrugation created with single, fine coils that are layered up, leaving the exterior evidence of the coiling, while smoothing the interior; Incised triangular design decorates top of jar from shoulder to rim; Collection history indicates that the artist gathered naturally occurring clay for this piece; Temper grit is visible in the clay body and appears to be basalt sand, similar to that used by some Ancestral Pueblo groups; Signed in pen on base “Richard Zane Smith 84 Wyandotte Descendant.”

Description Bowl with flat base, wide, round body, above mid-level shoulders and wide mouth; Interior and exterior are scraped smooth; Elaborate design is in Sikyatki revival style, a style that was recreated in the 19th century for market purposes; Designs in black and red are painted in slip on the burnished cream-colored background; Designs represent feathers, raindrops, clouds, and dance regalia; A surface burn mark is evidence of the oxidation firing; A ring band break in the line represents a Sipapu or place of human emergence from the Earth; There is a stippling in the design that is similar to an early Hopi potter known as Mrs. Poulisi, thus this piece may be by her; This piece is unsigned.

Description Rattle depicting an Ogre Katsina who is responsible for disciplining wayward children; The face is a gourd painted black with prominent white teeth in a red-outlined mouth; Protruding eyes are white circles with black pupils, and there are turquoise and black horns; Red feathers decorate the forehead and a white arrow-like shape is painted in the middle; Seven long, narrow black feathers frame the head; Short black feathers are attached to the back; The wooden handle is cylindrical and painted white; A twisted string loop is attached to the bottom surface of the handle; Signed “E. Nekwatewa” in pencil on the handle; Edmund Nekwatewa, the artist, was an important figure in recent Hopi history and a recognized author.
