Description Double saddle blanket woven entirely in plain tapestry technique; Design field is divided in half across the center by a wide band that was originally pink and beige; One end of the design field features beige Maltese crosses with pink centers and outlined in green with hooked appendages, all on a white background; Opposite end of design field shows rows of small squares stacked diagonally across the corners in colors of light pink, light gray, dark gray, beige, dark brown, and dark pink, all on white background; Selvage cords and end cords are white; Numerous large lazy lines are present down the center of the blanket; Corners were originally augmented with pink wool tassels.

Description Rain sash woven entirely in warp-faced technique; Design consists of raised zigzag line that runs entire length of sash on one face only, flanked on either side by short chevrons, both accomplished by skipping over several wefts at regular intervals; At each end of the sash, the warps are grouped to form six short tabs, whose ends pass through cotton-wrapped corn husk rings, and then hang pendant as long fringes.

Description Wall hanging made in form of half of a traditional dance sash, featuring Pueblo brocade in dark green, red, lilac, and black on rectangular piece of hand-woven warp-faced white cotton cloth; Designs are woven in bands of solid color, with each band incorporating negative white designs accomplished by passing the embroidery yarns over or under select numbers of foundation warps; Designs include rain and cloud symbols; At top edge, the base fabric is folded over and stitched to form a sleeve through which a wooden hanging rod passes; At bottom edge, paired plied warps are replied together and left as long fringe. This wall hanging was awarded a first place ribbon in its class in 1986 at the 65th Annual Santa Fe Indian Market, judged by Kate Peck Kent and Bruce Bernstein. Description 3-dimensional carved figure representing Kwahu or Eagle katsina, shown in standing position slightly leaning to one side with his wings outstretched; Figure’s upper torso is painted a coral color, with broad yellow patch extending across left shoulder and down front and back and down left upper arm, and large blue patch across right shoulder and extending down front and back and down right upper arm; Left forearm is painted blue and right forearm is painted yellow; Hands and mid-torso down to knees are painted white; Left leg below knee and foot are painted yellow, while right leg below knee and foot are blue; Figure wears short carved and painted dance kilt at front, carved and painted dance sash at right side, carved and painted sash belt around waist, and carved and painted feather bundle at rear; Black yarns are tied at each knee and on each wrist; Carved and painted case mask is turquoise colored on face and brown on reverse; Large yellow beak extends from mask, with black inverted “V” above it; Red tab ears are decorated with bits of cloth to look like deer skin; Mask is decorated with various gray feathers around neck, and on reverse; Carved and painted (turquoise colored) bundle on figure’s forehead represents corn husk bundle usually worn by katsina; Both arms of figure are decorated with a row of larger gray and black feathers and rabbit fur (?) to represent the eagle’s wing feathers.

Description Medium sized round wedding vase, with flat base, spherical body, and two very large and widely flaring spouts that are joined by an arching handle; Sides of vase are deeply carved with a large Avanyu (feathered serpent) image, shown head to tail and with a lightning bolt extending from its mouth; All exterior surfaces are highly burnished, and vase has been fired in a reduction firing to yield an even black color; “Mida Tafoya Santa Clara Pueblo” is lightly incised in script on base. Mida Tafoya is the daughter of Christina Naranjo, the sister of Mary Cain and Teresita Naranjo, niece of Margaret Tafoya, and the aunt of Stella Naranjo Chavarria, all of whose works are represented in the CAS pottery collection.

Description Small round canteen probably made in two halves that are joined together around sides, with short constricted neck added at top and two perforations have been made on either side of the neck to allow for carrying strap; Exterior surfaces of canteen are scraped smooth and covered with a white slip; Front of canteen is painted with around floral and geometric design in black and orange; Pinched seam around perimeter of canteen is painted orange on both front and back, and narrow orange line encircles neck just below rim; Reverse face of canteen is undecorated.

Description Effigy jar in the form of a human head with modeled nose and ears; Exterior surfaces are scraped very smooth and covered with a white slip; Eyes, eyebrows, lips, and nostrils are all painted black; Top of head is painted with two fine-line diamond shapes and series of black triangles to depict hair; Pair of corn kernels hang by white thread from perforation at bottom of each ear; Perforated nostrils on nose allow effigy to be fired without breaking; Artist’s signature “J. LENO ACOMA N.M.” is printed in block letters on base. Juana Leno is the mother of Rose Leno Chavez and Joyce Leno Barreras, both of whose work is also represented in the CAS collections.

Description 3-dimensional carving of two Koyemshi or Mudhead katsinam, both shown in standing position, each carved from a separate piece of antler that has been cut at each end and polished, but otherwise unmodified to form their bodies; Eyes, nose, and the top and side knots of their masks are made from small antler pegs that are placed into holes that were drilled into each figure’s head; Arms for each figure have also been fashioned separately and are glued to each figure’s sides; Piece of black felt is wrapped around waist of each figure and secured with black yarn to represent a dance kilt; First figure also wears piece of black felt around neck, secured with black yarn, while second figure wears piece of black velveteen around his neck, secured with black yarn; Both figures are pegged to base that is made from third piece of antler which has been cut at both ends, on bottom and on top to provide level surface on which figures stand.

Description Medium sized jar with flat base and flaring lower sides that rise to a high shoulder, then slope inward gently before flaring out again to form a short constricted neck, terminating in a very wide mouth; Portion of shoulder and neck has been cut away to form a kiva step cutout; Interior and exterior surfaces are scraped and sanded smooth and coated with a terra cotta-colored slip; Flecks of mica from the underlying clay still shine through; Except for rim cutout, jar is completely undecorated; Artist’s signature “Fransis B Tesuque Pueblo 6/27” is incised on base. This jar was awarded a second place ribbon at the 76th Annual Santa Fe Indian Market in 1997.

Description Model loom with partially woven Navajo-style sash belt; Wooden frame is made from two upright and two cross beams of split and peeled cedar wood that have been sanded smooth and varnished; Warp yarns of white, red, and green wool are wound around the upper cross beam (aka upper loom bar) and around a lower loom bar that is fashioned from a length of wooden dowel and tied to the lower cross beam with cotton string; The belt is woven in warp-faced technique, and the designs down the center of the belt are woven by selectively floating warps; Loom setup includes one primary heddle, two supplementary heddles for accomplishing the design, and a shuttle that is wound with the cotton weft; A shed rod maintains the opening between even and odd-numbered warps, while a batten is also used to keep the shed open in the area of weaving and also to beat the weft into place; Each warp is also wrapped around an additional bar at the top, acting as a spacer to ensure the warp yarns do not become tangled.
