Description Headdress consisting of pair of leather cords that are woven together to form single strand; End of single strand is turned back on itself and secured to form a loop at the end; Entire strand is worn around wearer’s forehead, with four short strands of red and yellow beads hanging pendant from the center, below two horizontal strands of small red beads and two commercial mother-of-pearl buttons; Areas that cover wearer’s temples are spiral wrapped with narrow flattened strip of aluminum; Separate plied leather cord is looped through loops at ends of forehead strand and hangs down wearer’s back; Part of this strand is wrapped with aluminum as single strand, then the two strands divide to form separate long pendant strands, both of which also incorporate a wooden stick and are fully wrapped with additional aluminum; One of the strands terminates in a single red and a single yellow plastic bead and a flat aluminum disk, stamped on one face with a cross pattern; Other strand terminates in a flat steel (?) disk that is undecorated; According to original field notes, metal jewelry worn by the Gabra is actually made by Konso metalsmiths; This type of headdress is worn by women.

Description Round open weave wicker dome with rounded bottom, made from peeled sticks woven together with camel skin thongs; Peeled sticks are arranged in groups of four, with 4 vertical groups arranged in one direction and 3 additional vertical groups crossing the first 4 groups at right angles on the base; 4 more groups of sticks are positioned horizontally inside to form the sides; The thong lacings on each group of sticks are woven in a simple tapestry weave in areas where there is only one level; In areas where two groups of sticks overlap, the thongs are also woven in a single-strand wrapped twining technique to secure both layers to each other; Exterior surface appears to have been rubbed with mud; According to field notes, this item was made for its female owner’s wedding and is used outdoors to perfume cloth (usually women’s and children’s clothing) by placing the dome over a depression in the ground in which aromatic wood and/or incense is burned, and then draping the cloth over the dome; the dome is also sometimes used a a temporary pen for baby animals.

Description Woman’s one-piece wrap-around dress, made in three rectangular panels (2 wide and 1 narrow) that are seamed together side by side; Upper half of each panel consists of a single rectangular piece of goat or sheep skin and the lower half consists of alternating narrow and wide skin strips; When the three panels are laid out along side each other, a narrow strip similar to the ones in the lower half of each panel is laid along the entire length of each panel, extending from the top to the bottom; According to original field notes, this dress is worn by wrapping it around a woman’s body, under her arms, and securing it by a shoulder strap or belt; In pre-colonial times, married women wore this type of dress for daily wear, and might have been buried in it, but now (in 1977), it is only worn at a woman’s wedding and may or may not be worn for burial.
