Description | Small cylindrical carrying basket with conical base and vertical sides, woven completely in open plain twining, except for first centimeter of basket start which is in closed plain twining; Warp and weft material is rye grass stems; Warps on base are parallel, changing on the sides to paired warps of which the fibers in each pair are diverted alternately to the left or right in each succeeding row of twining; At two points on the sides are inserted two pair of twisted warps for additional strength; Warps ends are braided together at rim and incorporated into heavy braided coil above rim that is joined to rim at regular intervals and extends an additional 27 cm beyond one complete revolution; Designs on upper half of basket are woven of red worsted wool yarn in false embroidery technique and consist of 5 single-row bands at regular intervals. | |
