| Description | Small spherical seed jar with narrow diameter flat base and perfectly rounded sides, rising to a small diameter round mouth; Interior and exterior are scraped smooth and exterior is lightly polished; Exterior is coated with white slip and painted with a floral motif with the mouth of the jar in the center and the four petals hanging halfway down the sides of the jar; In the spaces between the floral petals are four flute players, each with a different body shape; Three of the figures are standing upright, while the fourth one is hunched over, probably representing Kokopelli, the legendary flute player of Southwest mythology; All designs are painted in black; Signature “Lucy M. Lewis Acoma” on base. Noted Acoma potter Lucy Martin Lewis is the mother of grandmother of many well-known potters. She is the mother of Anne Lewis Hansen and the mother-in-law of Rita Lewis, both of whose works are also represented in the CAS pottery collection. | |
