| Description | Large round jar with rounded bottom, flaring sides that rise to a midlevel shoulder then abruptly slope inward forming a wide, low shoulder before rising again to form a short but wide neck with wide mouth and straight rim; Jar is formed using the coiling technique and the walls are scraped very thin and the exterior is polished to a smooth surface; Both interior and exterior are coated with a brick orange slip and the exterior is painted with a double band of paired, opposing black triangles just above the shoulder and a band of 10 Navajo yei masks (Talking God and 9 identical other masks) around the base of the neck; The masks are painted in black and white; Signature “Atééd Sáí Lucy (Leuppe) McKelvey Newcomb, N.M. Navajo” is painted in black paint on underside of jar. | |
