Description | Woman?s basketry hat with flat base and rounded slightly flaring sides, woven entirely in plain twining technique; The hat?s start is crossed warps; Primary warp material is tule stems; Primary weft material on base is tule stems and on the sides it is cattail stems; Secondary weft material used for designs on sides is maidenhair fern stems; Designs consist of large concentric diamond motif with serrated outer edges that is repeated four times in a band around center of basket, flanked above and below by band of chevrons; Central design band is woven in full twist overlay technique, while chevron bands are woven partly in full twist overlay and partly in wrapped twining techniques; Warp fibers are bent inward at rim and bound under the weft. | |
