| Description | Round jar with flat base, slightly flaring sides on lower body, well defined midlevel shoulder, and wide slightly inward sloping neck; Interior and exterior are scraped smooth; Exterior is divided into two sections, the upper in a natural beige finish and unpolished, the lower coated with red slip and burnished; Upper section is decorated in a repeating pattern of paired diagonal triangles and semicircles, whose outer edges are incised and painted white with a red-orange outline and red-orange with a white outline, respectively; Interior is unpainted. Signed “Tomasita Montoya San Juan Pueblo New Mexico” on bottom. Tomasita Reyes Montoya was one of the original 8 potters in the 1930s San Juan Pueblo revival of pottery production. She was the mother of Dominguita Naranjo and Rosita de Herrera, the latter of whose work is also represented in the CAS pottery collection. | |
