Description | Very large and deep round basket with flat base and widely flaring sides, woven in coiled technique over 3-rod foundation; Designs are in red bud and consist of 4 serrated zigzags that spiral from base to rim; Traces of red wood throughout the basket (other than in design) indicate that primary weft material is peeled redbud rather than willow; Overall shape of this basket is similar to that of a cooking basket as well as of a cremation basket, but its size is many times larger than either, suggesting this was probably commissioned by a private collector solely for display purposes. | |
