Description | Small round wheel-thrown jar with flat base and globose body, whose sides reach their maximum diameter at mid-level height before tapering inward and then rise to form a short but wide neck with flaring rim and rounded lip; Two effigy handles in the form of busts of indeterminate horned animals (possibly goats) are mounted opposite each other facing outward, with their horns attached to the jar’s rim and the base of their necks attached to the jar’s shoulder; One of the handles extends slightly above the jar’s rim; Interior and exterior of jar are scraped smooth and entire exterior (including base) and interior of neck are coated with a brick-red slip; Faint trace of a zigzag line burnished into the red slip encircles the jar’s neck on the exterior; Small diameter perforation (probably for attaching a carrying strap of some kind) extends vertically through each of the handles, from the top of the animal’s head to the underside of its face. | |
