Description | Large shallow wheel-thrown bowl with short footed base and flaring sides that rise to a broad everted rim with rounded lip; Interior and exterior are scraped smooth and then probably coated with a white slip; Designs are painted in several shades of blue and green; Interior of bowl shows circular area in center filled with various motifs, which are mostly obliterated except for a single leafy plant stem; Around the sides of the bowl are 6 men, seated with their legs crossed and dressed in blue robes and short peaked hats; Most of them are posed with their hands held out to their sides; A decorative band filled with what appears script writing encircles the bowl’s rim; Exterior of bowl is painted with 10 green leafy plant fronds, alternating with pairs of dark blue vertical lines; Interior and exterior of bowl, with exception of footed base, are coated with thick glass-like glaze, whose surface has deteriorated to such an extent and become iridescent that much of the design is now obliterated. | |
