Gold filigree and turquoise necklace with a gold coin pendant and thirteen six-pointed stars; Necklace is made entirely of gold, save a turquoise inset in each star; The stars each have three pendant drops suspended from them; Centered beneath the stars is a gold coin hanging by a V-shaped thin chain link; Coin is Turkish, of 100 kurush denomination; One side shows the tughra (seal or signature) of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed V with the number three below, indicating the coin was minted in the third year of his reign (1912 by the Gregorian calendar); The reverse design includes the year of the sultan’s ascension, 1327 (1909 by the Gregorian calendar); According to the donor, the necklace predates the coin, as the former had been in the donor’s family much longer and had been worn by her paternal grandmother in Rezaia, Ourmay, Iran, in the 1880’s to 1890’s. |
