The small, brightly colored flowers are typically bractless and borne in elongate terminal panicles. All parts of the plant contain poisonous alkaloid compounds that can be lethally toxic to cattle. It thrives between 850–1000m and blooms from May until June.
DISTRIBUTION: This perennial herb, native to Eurasia, is now naturalized in disturbed sites along the Cascade Range of Northern California (south of McLoud, southern Siskyou and adjacent Shasta County).
