The unique fuchsia-like flowers and sharp bristles along the stem make this species one of California's most unusual ornamental shrubs. Reflexed red sepals sit below upturned white petals surrounding a long white style. Although many gooseberries are prized for their edible fruit, the berries of this species are composed mostly of skin and seeds.
DISTRIBUTION: Found typically in forest openings and chaparral below 300 meters along the central and north Coast, outer Coast Ranges throughout California and the southern Sierra Nevada foothills.
