Bogbean Menyanthes trifoliata (Menyanthaceae)
The flowers are white to pink and arranged in a raceme on a long peduncle. Many scaly hairs on the upper surface of the petals give it a comical appearance. The stem, is prostrate with basal leaves in an alternating pattern. The leaves are sometimes used in beer making as a hops substitute.
DISTRIBUTION: Found in and near ponds, bogs, swamps, seeps and wet meadows from the Bay Area and Sierra Nevada north and east to Colorado and Alaska.
