Asterionella Hassall

Description

Frustules pennate, araphid, elongate, asymmetrical to the transapical axis, symmetrical to the apical axis, striae fine, axial area narrow. Cells are joined at the broadest apex by mucilage pads to form stellate or spiral colonies. Some populations are particularly susceptible to chytrid infestations.
