Diadesmus Kutzing

Valves small, linear to linear lanceolate, usually less than 20 microns. Biraphid, although the raphe may be secondarily filled with silica and appear absent. The genus is characteristically aerophilic - found growing associated with mosses and attached to damp rocks. Cells form band-like colonies, which are often linked by spines. Plastids are single and may be slightly lobed.
