Nitzschia Hassall

Description

Frustules biraphid, symmetrical to apical and transapical axes, raphe marginal to nearly central, crossed transapically by fibulae that may nearly reach across the valve. Raphe system of one valve positioned diagonally opposite raphe system of other valve of a frustule. Striae unresolved to distinctly punctate.

Species of this genus are numerous and occur in benthic (and rarely planktonic) habitats in many lentic and lotic systems.
