Frustules biraphid, symmetrical to transapical axis, asymmetrical to the apical axis. Dorsal margin slightly arcuate, ventral margin straight to slightly concave, tumid at the central area. Axial area narrow, central area unilaterally expanded toward ventral margin. Single stigma located just ventral to the dilated proximal raphe ends. Kociolek and Stoermer (1987) proposed this genus for a species complex originally assigned to Cymbella.
