Description

Biraphid frustules, symmetrical to the apical and transapical axes, striae distinctly punctate. Axial area distinct, may be expanded along apical axis, external raphe ends dilated, distal raphe ends deflected. Transapical thickenings occur near the apices in some species.

This genus represents the former Navicula pupula group, a complex of closely related species resurrected by Mann (1989).
